Over 70% Believe Golf Membership is Not Value for Money - But, What Can Clubs Do?

January 11, 2018

2016 Precedent i2 Golf Resort 5 (Medium)

Recent research by golfsupport.com found that 72% of golfers now believe that their local golf memberships did not give value for their money. The survey involved 560 participants from towns across the UK.

The survey results are a great cause for concern for golf clubs as they already face the challenge of adding new members while retaining the existing ones. Adding new members and keeping existing subscriptions are important steps to ensure the very existence of the clubs in the long run.

However, given the attitude of patrons, as revealed by the survey, what can clubs possibly do to attract and retain memberships?

Reduce Membership Fees

One of the possible conclusions from the above survey is that a reduction in membership fees can be the solution to attract more members, with many participants in the survey having revealed that the membership fees were becoming unaffordable.

However, participants also revealed that this did not mean that they would never want to become a member of a golf club.

This finding is crucial for golf clubs as they stand a great chance of attracting more members interested in joining a golf club if fees could be lowered.

Elevate Services to Meet Customer Expectations

Another possible conclusion that the survey leads to, is that members now expect more benefits from club memberships for them to be of value. Clubs, therefore, need to find a way to give more exclusive benefits to members.

Tight Budgets – An Issue for Clubs

As the majority of clubs operate on tight budgets, it makes it highly difficult to cater to the above customer expectations.

Golf Buggy Rental – The Solution

Carryway presents golf buggy rental as a viable solution for golf clubs.

Create a Revenue-Generating Channel

By offering golf buggies for hire, clubs can create an individual channel that generates substantial revenue. Clubs can offer these buggies for hire to club members and visitors, and for corporate events. At an average hire rate of £15 for every round, clubs can raise substantial income to add to their finances.

This alternate channel for generating revenue can help offset the expense of membership cost reduction, or investment in new facilities to help attract new members and justify the costs to existing members.

Create More Value for Members

With buggy rental hire, you can offer a new and convenient service for clients, which will make them feel privileged and cared for. You would be giving them more value for their money, and clients get the feeling that the club is willing to do more for its members.

When clients feel they are getting more value for their money, they will be happier to continue their membership while more new clients will be willing to join.

Testimonials

Andrew Fairnie – Golf Services Manager, The Gleneagles Hotel

Our guests have high expectations when they come to golf at Gleneagles, and the classic aesthetics and high quality finish on the Club Car vehicles have met their needs perfectly.

The GPS system in particular has been very popular – in addition to providing course information, it even allows golfers to email themselves their score card to review at home.

Daryn Cochrane – Head of Golf & PGA Professional, The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort

Thank you for the excellent customer service that we recently received from Hugh Healy, Carryway Support. Hugh was very thorough and had excellent communications with us regarding our buggy fleet at The Westerwood Resort – nothing was too difficult for him.

Nick Rushworth – Golf Operations Director, MacDonald Linden Hall

It is a pleasure to work with Carryway, the service and support they provide has been first class. We originally signed up for 14 brand new buggies for one year to sample working with the company.

We were pleased with the service and the product provided and have since signed up for the next few seasons and hopefully with many more to come after that.
